Well be back to more seasonable temps for mid and end of week with a chance of showers Thursday. Fish for bass on Sodus Bay throwing-out worm rigs between the islands at the north end of the bay. Well have to wait and see how much flows will change but it should bring flows up high but not blown. The northeast coastal weather put a damper on show attendance and the vendors participating were down some thanks to Covid worry but the anglers who did visit the show had good interest in all of the Lake Ontario trout and salmon fishing opportunities. Slight warm up for the weekend with chance of rain end of weekend and then cold for start of next week. Since we are not getting cold temps and/or snow, hopefully we can get rain along with the warm temps to help maintain flows. With the mid week warm up look for flows to be on the rise and opening up some and going off color about thru the mid/end of week. In the Steelhead Division, Karen Mang of East Concord, NY is top fish catcher with a 16-pound, 12-ounce Olcott fish. That flow is still actually fishable unless its high AND dirty. Flows in the Oak have retreated some to slightly high and slightly stained. Anglers seeing and having hook up success on browns is encouraging we are likely on a trajectory to out pace last years brown trout action already. We used wire dipseys with herring strip fly rigs. Slightly high and stained flows make for good drifting chances after all the high and dirty. Brown trout reports still about 50% good/50% slow. Not hearing of much lower river and rivermouth action as probably the bulk of Kings are more upstream now. Salmon are stacked up in Olcott Harbor and spinners are working for shore casters. Look for fish to be well spread upstream thru all the waterways with anglers wise to spread out too and try different spots to find fish. For now flows in the Oak are something like a notch less then medium and going clear. Forecast is continued warm thru tomorrow with chance of precipitation end of day or later tomorrow. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. Hearing of legit salmon bites and even a few browns too in fast water areas on the Oak. Temps are on the mild side, dropping down some at night and thru today and over the next part of the week we are getting some melt off which should be good for maintenance. Fishable flows we have now in Johnson, Oak and Sandy largely a result of bolstered Erie Canal flows. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. If theres steelhead in the Oak then more then likely theres a few slinking up those smaller waterways too. Flow conditions right now are more like nice steelhead water and higher then typical fall flows. Keep informed from the NYS Canal web for changes and restrictions with canal waters. FREE boat launching until the Spring! We started the morning in the same water we had been fishing. More fish are holding and staging now in fast water areas below the dam. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Maybe those fish pushed further upriver as so far theres not been a lot of holding or spawning action except for the piling up at the dam. Knowing there were kings laying on the bottom, we left our divers out with meat. Flows in the Oak are responding nicely to a few days of previous cold with dropping and clearing. The charter fleet has had king salmon action in 100-120 FOW using chrome glow flasher fly combinations down to 60 ft. For now on the Oak anglers seem to be hooking up on a few steelhead nearest the dam that came along with the higher flows of a few weeks ago mixed in with a handful of fresh fish trickling in thru the downstream fast water. Canal water is a decent level. Most Kings will be spawning or on zombie patrol with the occasional fresher fish. Canal feed should be continued there so if we find out any intel for that we will pass along. Some decent brown trout action now for most anglers on the Oak seemingly on the backside of these most recent higher flows. So conditions real nice, especially considering how dry summer was and how some of this fall has been so far. We are surely going to have water for high and off color flows when the weather breaks toward spring. Water color is real nice at slightly stained 2 ft of visibility so drift chances for now are the best theyve been so far this late winter/early spring period. The first will be a 1 day event July 10th. Best chance at hookups is going to be covering different spots on the same trib and/or moving around to different tribs. For now in the near term low and clear flows are not in the cards.
